Bitcoin Desktop Wallet

What happens if you lose your device that your desktop wallet is in? Can you download the software again somewhere else and access it?
Or is it pretty much gone unless you have a backup copy of it somewhere?
Finally my understanding as of now is that the difference between desktop and web comes down to privacy and convenience trade off. I hear people touting Electrum to being lightweight for desktop wallet, but it requires you to provide information to a third party like all the web wallets like coin base. So why would you use Electrum at all when you could just use coinbase and get the added convenience?

Recommend to newbies: install Bitcoin desktop wallet Exodus or not?

A message to friends, family, acquaintances new to the scene. How about spreading Bitcoin Cash at a grassroots level via desktop wallet. This is not a paid shill post. How does exodus fit into the range of wallets mentioned here in terms of security?
Could you consider doing something Bitcoin related? I would like you to install some software on your computer so I can send you some cryptocurrency called Bitcoin Cash. I know you are busy, however the steps are simple and its fun.
  1. Visit https://www.exodus.io/
  2. Download and install exodus wallet. There no options and once quickly installed it should just work.
  3. Run program. Your wallets will be empty.
  4. Click Wallets on left panel. Select Bitcoin Cash from alphabetical list. Press Receive button. Click the first (of four) buttons to copy this address to clipboard.
  5. Paste this long code into a reply to this message.
If you do this I can send you money as a gift, donation, reward or tip. You can watch your small amount of digital money, often called dust, grow and in the future add to your portfolio yourself. This wallet can expand to include other cryptocurrencies as the markets for these new digital assets grows. Good luck with it and let me know how you start with Bitcoin Cash.

What would you argue is the best bitcoin desktop wallet for mac?

I have been using Hive and I love the UI. I love the push notification feature that tells you when you get a payment, for me that is a selling point. It is also very simple to use, I just don't like that I only get one address. With that in mind...

What desktop bitcoin wallet do you use and which would you argue is the best?

Side note: What other apps on mac have push notifications?

bitcoin desktop wallet for noob?

on my first encounter to bitcoin i did install bitcoin qtwallet on my desktop, and as i go deeper into crypto world, that desktop wallet is impractical and not secure in my opinion
first u need to sync the blockchain, then u got another problem if u r behind firewall or proxy, and then you need to encrypt it to make it secure.
and that is not enough, you need to be sure ur pc is free of malware, it wont crash, ur harddrive wont be stolen, and make sure to close the app if u leave ur pc so no one can toying with it if u r not around
and yet we always tell the newbies to install this desktop wallet, even bitcoin "official" site or video told us to install that app.
this seems to be complicated and cumbersome for late adopters, why dont we just told them a simple and safer way like blockchain.info or coinbase.com ? any reason?
